We’re about 3 months away from our big vacation in 2025. It’s my first cruise ever! I’ll be traveling with my boyfriend, his parents, other family members, and some family friends. They’ve all done this before, but I’m completely new to it. What should I pack? Any tips to make the trip better? We’re heading to the Bahamas, and flights, passports, and the cruise are all set—just need advice for the ship and any off-ship activities. Thanks so much!

Also, I’m feeling a little nervous about being on a boat for so long. I’m worried I might feel sick or not enjoy the experience."
Watch videos about your cruise ship and the destinations you’re visiting. You’ll find plenty of helpful info online from people who’ve done it before. Try joining a group for your cruise on social media, but don’t let negative comments ruin your excitement. Stay positive—you’ll have an amazing time!

Good advice! Also, don’t forget to check this forum for tons of tips—search around and you’ll find answers to most questions!
I usually feel a little off on the first day, so I bring non-drowsy motion sickness meds and sea bands. Also, pack a carry-on bag with essentials like medications, snacks, and a book, because it can take a while for your luggage to arrive at your room. Bring some basic meds like ibuprofen and antacids just in case. If you’ve got a drink package, remember you’ll be charged tax while the ship is still in port. Pay attention to the times listed for returning to the ship after excursions—they won’t wait if you’re late! Lastly, take some time to relax and get settled in your cabin.
@Darcy
Great point about keeping track of time! I always bring a watch and set it to the ship’s clock to avoid any confusion.
I start taking motion sickness pills a couple of nights before the cruise begins. Bonine works better for me than Dramamine. Don’t take it during the day unless you’re okay with feeling really sleepy!
I’m going on my first cruise in January, too! I’m also feeling a bit nervous about the whole thing.

Same here! I think I’m mostly stressed because everyone I’m traveling with has done this before, and I’m the only newbie.
@Vin
Funny enough, for me, the only thing keeping me calm is that the people I’m going with have done it before! My partner is more worried about the crowds than anything else.

I’m just worried I’ll mess something up in front of all the cruise experts. It feels like so much pressure!
@Vin
Oh, I know I’ll mess something up for sure! I’m just trying to go with the flow and not overthink it.
Did you know the cabin walls are magnetic? Bring some magnetic hooks to hang sweaters or light items. Packing cubes are also super useful for keeping your suitcase organized. Be prepared to wait a bit for your room to be ready—use that time to explore the ship. If you’re planning on hitting the beach, rinse your beach shoes off in the shower afterward. And if you feel seasick, head to a lower deck in the middle of the ship—that’s usually the most stable spot.
The wait to board and settle in is worth it! Once you’re on the ship, you’ll love it.
Make sure to pack a small carry-on for the first day. You probably won’t see your luggage for a few hours, so keep essentials like meds, chargers, and maybe a swimsuit with you. Don’t forget some cash for tipping porters—it goes a long way! While you wait for your room to be ready, explore the ship and grab something to eat. Time will pass quickly, and your room will be ready before you know it.
Here’s a fun tip: Put a magnetic pineapple on your cabin door. It’s a signal to the crew that it’s your first cruise, and they’ll go the extra mile to help you out.
There’s already a ton of advice posted on this forum. Make sure you look around—you’ll find great tips everywhere!
