How to get around St Maarten with a big group?

We are a group of 6 adults and 3 kids and need some advice on the best way to get around St Maarten. We want to visit Maho Beach, Marigot, Friars Bay Beach, and maybe Grand Case. I’m considering renting cars (probably two), but I’m worried about traffic. Would it be realistic (and affordable) to negotiate with a taxi or two to stay with us for the day?

We looked into Bernard’s custom tours, but they are a bit too expensive for us, and the set tours don’t cover all the spots we want to visit. Any tips or advice would be great!

Here’s the original post again, just for reference:

I’m curious: what quote did you get from Bernard’s? And what is your budget?

I ask because I know St Martin pretty well (most recently was there 7 months ago) and I have some local contacts. I might be able to give you some helpful advice.

For Maho Beach, parking is limited since it’s right by the road, and it’s always full of thrill seekers and plane enthusiasts.

For Maho Beach, you can take a taxi directly there, and when you’re ready to leave, you can catch a taxi in the parking lot near the restaurant. I haven’t been to the other spots, but others might be able to tell you if taxis are available there too.

Most taxis are vans that hold around 8 passengers. With 9 people, you might need two vans. At the port, there’s a taxi stand where you can get a taxi to wherever you need to go.

My tip for Maho Beach is to go in the afternoon, not in the morning, because many of the bigger planes from the US arrive after noon.
