Should I bring a wetsuit for snorkeling in Key West this January?

I’m going on a Celebrity cruise for four nights (FLL - Key West - Bimini) and booked a snorkeling excursion in Key West. I’m seeing different opinions on how cold the water might be, so I’m wondering if I should bring a wetsuit so I don’t get too cold. Any advice would be appreciated!

It really depends on how cold the fronts come in. I’ve been in January when it was 90 degrees and I snorkeled without a wetsuit. But I’ve also been in January when it was 50 degrees. You should check the extended forecast before you leave to help decide. If you have room, it’s probably a good idea to pack it just in case.

The water will be in the low 70’s. Whether or not you need a wetsuit depends on how you feel about cooler water. I’m going diving in Bimini next weekend and I’ll definitely be bringing my 3mm wetsuit.

We cruised to Key West around this time of year in 2017, and the temperature was in the low to mid-50s outside. I’d recommend bringing the wetsuit if you’re serious about snorkeling this time of year.

They might not even do the excursion if it’s too cold for snorkeling. We booked a snorkeling excursion in late December one year and they wouldn’t let us snorkel, even though I had a wetsuit ready. They just took us around the boat. Honestly, I wish I hadn’t booked it. Felt like a waste of money.

Yes, definitely bring a wetsuit. At least a 3mm.

For sure bring a wetsuit. The water will be cold in January!
