Anyone know about taking Tylenol with codeine on a cruise?

Hey everyone, I’m going on my first 9-day cruise in the Caribbean this February. I’m from Canada and take a few medications. My question isn’t about prescription meds; I know I can bring those!

I’m more curious about over-the-counter stuff like Gravol, Benadryl, and Tylenol No. 1. The Tylenol has a small amount of codeine, and that’s what I’m concerned about.

Has anyone here traveled with Tylenol No. 1 before? Any advice? Also, does anyone know if it might be an issue crossing into the U.S.?

Thanks in advance for your help!

It’s usually fine as long as it’s in its original bottle.

Prescriptions aren’t my concern—it’s the Tylenol with codeine.

That should be okay too, but I’d still keep it in its original bottle.

@Alston
I think that might not be correct.

Codeine requires a prescription in the U.S. If you don’t have one, it could be an issue.

Oh, right—it’s legal over the counter in Canada. I’ve never had trouble with prescriptions, but Tylenol No. 1 might be different since it’s not legal the same way in the U.S.

You’re dealing with a unique situation. A medication that’s OTC in Canada but prescription-only in the U.S. can cause confusion.

While it’s unlikely to lead to legal trouble, there’s always a small chance it might. Be cautious.

It probably won’t be an issue. My partner always packs a ton of medications, and we’ve never been stopped. Just don’t bring an excessive amount or anything that looks suspicious.

Is Tylenol with codeine OTC in Canada? I didn’t know that. Either way, as long as you bring only what you need, you should be fine.

I always pack a big bag of medications when I travel and have never had issues flying from Canada to the U.S.

@Finn
Yeah, in Canada you can get Tylenol No. 1 (with codeine) over the counter. It’s not as strong as the prescription version (T3s), but it’s still effective.

In that case, I’d double-check with a pharmacist or even ask border staff about any restrictions.

I always travel with a mix of prescription and OTC meds. I use a daily pill organizer and keep screenshots of my prescriptions, just in case. Never had an issue so far!

Keep it in the original packaging, and you should be fine.
