Broadway shows used to make up a significant portion of the entertainment on the bigger, newer ships (NCL Epic until NCL Encore) a few years ago. These shows have abruptly stopped due to the Prima class. A few game shows and dancing shows have taken their place, but they are obviously inferior to the complete presentations. Sad to see NCL taking short cuts while RCCL continues to have these whos.
Indeed, it was reported last fall that they would be discontinuing production shows, which was very disappointing. We chose NCL as our cruise line because of their performances. Many of them were swapped out for opportunities to participate in game shows like Wheel of Fortune. We no longer see value with NCL, therefore we’ve started sailing with other lines like Royal.
@Salish Yes, the substitute entertainment they provide isn’t of the same quality. It seriously detracts from the cruise experience as it is far behind other cruise lines.
@Mitchelle Now, after Disney, I believe Royal has the second-best shows.
These tribute performances can be produced on the cheap, with only a singer and possibly five dancers, and without the need for expensive stage settings. reducing expenses.
@Meech Royal has moved to in house productions as well, no more licensed shows I believe.
@Mboks It’s interesting considering this year saw the release of Wizard of Oz on a Seas icon. It’s still a musical, even if I believe this is their rendition! However, Utopia and Wonder don’t have one, so it appears that they are being more selective.
@Salish Yes, I was careful how I worded it. Anything that requires an additional fee is being avoided by them. I was surprised to see a Johnny Rockets on Utopia since I had assumed it would no longer be there. For the Icon class, there won’t be any.
@Mboks Harmony is still playing Grease right now, although it might just be a case of the license being wrung dry. I think the other show is in house.
For me, the “broadway” productions were the main attraction. I am so disappointed in them for doing this.
For now, Viva still has beetlejuice. However, it appears that they are all departing.
@Jemmy Like Summer on Prima, it’s very likely to be canceled as soon as the license expires.
Six were cut on Bliss & Breakaway. Yes, I am aware. All cruise lines aim to take as much money as possible from you, but NCL is undoubtedly the most active when it comes to upselling and nickel and diming. Of course, among the mainstream cruise lines, they also provide the most extensive alcohol packages, so that’s something.
@Hudson That’s unfortunate—in February, we witnessed Six on the Bliss. Fantastic show!
@Grande The performances of Jersey Boys on Bliss last autumn were truly on par with broadway standards.
@Hudson We saw Jersey Boys twice before, during their original Canadian Broadway tour, about ten years ago. The original cast was incredible, so we had high expectations for the show, and while it didn’t live up to those expectations this time, it was still fantastic. We saw Jersey Boys on the cruise as well, and it was decent. We had never seen Six before, and it was quite remarkable.
@Grande Although Jersey Boys is a fantastic program, I wouldn’t watch it again.
Additionally, Six is quite inexpensive to operate. Ahh.
The entertainment on the Escape the previous year left me feeling really let down.
Yes, it is disappointing. NCL genuinely wants to nickel and dime consumers and make food more affordable. It is depressing. When they offered entertainment and food on par with RCL and CCL, I liked them. However, they continue to make mistakes, and to be honest, it seems like their leadership will eventually force them to be bought out. Sack shows, exchange spice H20 for VR, and blow up the pool deck in the breakaway+ class. It would be great if they could hire some Royal executives, particularly in the programming department.
@Candy Sack shows, exchange spice H20 for VR, and blow up the pool deck in the breakaway+ class.
In a few months, the encore will go into drydock to address this. Encore will soon have access to Spice H20 and other items.
