Do these Caribbean ports have beach access or should I book an excursion?

Hey folks,

I’m not really into excursions and would rather just spend the day at the beach. I’m going to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Phillipsburg, St. Maarten, and wanted to know if there’s easy access to the beach at these ports or if I should consider booking an excursion. Any advice?

St. Maarten is a short walk to the beach—about 15 minutes. There are plenty of shops and restaurants there too, so it’s a really easy beach day. If you don’t feel like walking, there’s a ferry ride option to get there instead.

As for San Juan, if you’re docking in Old San Juan, there’s no real beach access in that area. But it’s a lovely area to walk around with lots of shops and sights. No need for an excursion at either port.

Old San Juan is full of great restaurants and walkable streets, but it’s not really a beach place. It’s more for shopping and exploring the area on foot.

In St. Maarten, there are several beaches where you can just show up, rent a lounge chair and umbrella, and relax. No need for an excursion. You can take a taxi from the port to the beach you want. There are signs for each beach, and a dispatcher will help you find a taxi to your choice.

Just make sure the beach you choose isn’t too remote. If it is, you may need to arrange with the taxi driver for a pick-up time to make sure you can get back to the ship. A beach we love is Mullet Bay Beach. It has a large beach area, turquoise water, and food and drink available. Taxis wait there to take you back to the port. I’m sure others here can suggest more great beaches.
