Looking for Alaska cruise ideas… small ship, good food, room service?

My parents are thinking about their first cruise, and Alaska is at the top of their list. They’ve been looking at American Cruise Line, but they’ve got specific preferences. They enjoy first-class travel, love having breakfast via room service, and prefer light or Mexican beer.

Here’s what they’re looking for in the perfect cruise:

  • Good food with variety
  • Small ships (300 passengers or fewer preferred, max of 600)
  • Room service for breakfast
  • Nice, comfortable rooms

None of us have cruise experience, so any suggestions or tips would really help. Thanks!

If they want something under 600 passengers, they should look at luxury lines like Windstar, Silversea, Regent, or Seabourn. UnCruise is an option too, but it’s more about adventure than luxury.

If they’re okay with a bit bigger, Princess and Holland have smaller mainstream ships (around 2,000 passengers, not quite the 300–600 range). Princess does offer room service breakfasts as part of the base fare, which might be nice!

Silversea is a great choice if money isn’t a concern. Their ships are small, have almost one staff member per guest, and offer amazing food and suites. Not sure about the beer options, though.

I’d suggest Silver Seas. Their ships are all-inclusive and small. I’m booked on one next year out of Iceland—375 passengers and 325 crew. It’s a great balance of size and service.

Viking is a bit larger than your max number of passengers, but it could still check most of their boxes.

Seabourn might be exactly what they’re looking for. They have an amazing Alaska program, and the Ventures by Seabourn excursions let you explore by kayak and Zodiac with their staff. The food is excellent, and the service is top-notch. Alcohol, Wi-Fi, and even dinner from the main menu can all be ordered via room service.

Silversea is probably your best bet. Check out Jeb Brooks’ YouTube video on his Silversea Alaska cruise. It’s from a few months ago and might help you get a feel for it!

Every time I see Jeb Brooks’ name, my brain switches it to Jeb BUSH. I don’t know why, but it’s hilarious!

My family loves Regent. We did an Alaska cruise on their Explorer ship last summer. It’s a high-end experience (not cheap) but totally worth it for us. Even though we don’t fit the usual age group, we enjoy the smaller ships and excellent service.

We’ve also tried Seabourn, the ‘new’ Crystal, and Oceania, but Regent is our favorite. Haven’t done Ritz Explora yet, so I can’t compare. Their ships hold 750 passengers, but it feels smaller due to the space-per-person ratio. Hope that helps!

There’s almost no budget limit. Please send all your recommendations!

We went on the HAL Eurodam in June. Their ships are smaller compared to lines like Royal Caribbean or Carnival, but they’re not under 600 passengers. The food was better than most other mainstream lines, and the specialty dining (like Pinnacle Grill) was fantastic.

The average age of passengers skews older—around 60—and we only saw about 15–20 kids onboard. I preferred the main dining room for breakfast, but they do offer room service if that’s your thing.
