What should I know before my first cruise?

We’re about 3 months away from our big 2025 vacation! It’s my first-ever cruise. I’ll be traveling with my boyfriend, his parents, other family members, and some family friends. They’ve all done this before, but I’m new to it. What should I pack? Any tips to make the trip better? We’re heading to the Bahamas, and the flights, passports, and cruise are already sorted—just need advice for the boat and off-ship activities. Thanks in advance!

Also, I’m kind of nervous about being on a boat for so long. I’m worried I’ll feel sick and not enjoy it.

Watch videos about your ship and the places you’re visiting. You’ll find a lot of helpful stuff online from cruise experts. Try joining a Facebook group for your cruise, but don’t let the complainers get to you. Stay positive, and you’ll have a great time!

I feel a bit off the first day, so I use non-drowsy motion sickness meds and sea bands. Pack a small carry-on with things like meds, snacks, and a book—your luggage might take a while to get to your room. Bring over-the-counter meds like ibuprofen and antacids, just in case. If you have a drink package, be aware you’ll get charged tax before the ship leaves port. Stick to the times listed for returning to the ship after excursions—they won’t wait for you! Take time to settle into your cabin and relax.

@Chandler
Good point about ship time! I always bring a watch and set it to the ship’s clock. It helps avoid mix-ups.

I start taking motion sickness pills two nights before the cruise. Bonine works better than Dramamine for me. Don’t take it during the day unless you want to nap through everything!

You’ll get better advice if you share details like the cruise line, ship, length of the trip, and the group’s interests. Every cruise has its own vibe!

I’m going on my first cruise in January too! Feeling a bit nervous myself.

Same here! I think I’m stressed because everyone I’m going with has done this before, and I’m the newbie.

@Lior
That’s funny! For me, the only thing keeping me calm is knowing the people I’m with have done this before. My SO is more worried about it being crowded than anything.

I’m worried I’ll mess something up in front of all the cruise pros. Feels like a lot of pressure!

@Lior
Oh, I know I’ll mess something up! Just trying to go with the flow.

The cabin walls are magnetic, so bring magnetic hooks for sweaters or other light items. Packing cubes are great for keeping things organized in your suitcase. Be ready to wait a bit before your room is ready—use the time to explore the ship. If you’re hitting the beach, rinse off your beach shoes in the shower afterward. If you feel seasick, head to a lower deck in the middle of the ship.

The wait is worth it! You’ll love it once you’re on the boat.

Make sure to pack a small carry-on bag for the first day. You won’t see your luggage right away, so keep essentials like meds, chargers, and a swimsuit with you. Don’t forget cash to tip the porters—it makes a difference! While waiting for your room, explore the ship and grab something to eat. Time will fly, and your room will be ready before you know it.

Put a magnetic pineapple on your cabin door. It signals to the crew that it’s your first cruise, and they’ll be extra helpful in showing you the ropes.
