I’m going on my first cruise and I’m trying to figure out what to do about calls, texts, and internet. Some people said to get an international calling plan, but others say it’s expensive. Can I use my mobile data, or do I have to pay for the ship’s wifi? I can share more details if needed.

You’re usually better off paying for the ship’s wifi and keeping your phone in airplane mode. Depending on the cruise line, you might be able to use wifi calling for calls and texts. Avoid using the ship’s cellular network without a plan, or you’ll get charged a ridiculous amount. Trust me, you don’t want that bill.

So, just to confirm, the ship’s wifi is the best option for staying connected? And does that include calls and texts?

Yeah, for most people, that’s the simplest way to stay online. Whether you can make calls depends on the cruise line, though. Some block them over wifi.
Every cruise is different. Some ships have decent internet, others barely work. Don’t expect streaming or video calls. Email and basic browsing are usually fine. If staying connected is critical, look into options like Cellular at Sea or apps like WhatsApp for texting. Good luck!

Things have improved on most major cruise lines. I’ve managed to work from ships, including video calls and file uploads. Just don’t expect land-level speeds.

For context, it’s a Royal Caribbean cruise on Voyager of the Seas.

That ship uses Starlink for internet. You’ll need to buy the ship’s wifi package.
I always keep my phone on airplane mode and use wifi only. Check your phone plan because some exclude cruise ship networks and charge huge fees if you make calls at sea.
There’s no mobile data in the middle of the ocean. Cruise ships use Cellular at Sea, and it’s insanely expensive without a plan. Need more info to give better advice.
Simplest solution is to buy the ship’s wifi. Or, take the chance to disconnect and relax. In port, you might find free wifi at cafes or other spots.
Skip the ship wifi if you can. I used an online virtual SIM for data while cruising and only connected in port or close to land. Worked great for basic needs like maps and messaging.
If you’re on shore, an international plan works. On the ship, you’ll need the wifi package for internet. Put your phone in airplane mode to avoid crazy fees from Cellular at Sea.
